The photographs I took of my grandmother were all taken after her cancer diagnosis, and most of them were taken a few months before she died. Only days before I was scheduled to visit, she became ill, and I sensed she was feeling some anxiety and sorrow over her diminishing health. I wanted to capture on film her experience, as well as to provide a glimpse of her personality. I also sought to record my own internal response to what was happening.
(I visited with her again just before she died, although, out of respect, I chose not to take any pictures during that final visit. Here you can see a snapshot of when she and I first saw each other and one of when we last saw each other.)
